Contested races in upcoming council, school board elections

Wednesday marked the deadline for potential candidates to file for several area elections. Four individuals added their names to the pot for positions in two of the upcoming elections. Three candidates announced Wednesday that they intended to run for places in the city council election. Barbi Jones and Rick Melcer submitted applications to run against Jesse Castanuela for place 4 on the council while D.B. “Dub” Smith filed his application for place 5 against incumbent Donald Barley. In the May election of the Brady Independent School District Board of Trustees, Monte Owens submitted his name on Wednesday to run against Al Pearson for the District 4 seat. Others on the May 5 ballot for school board include Andy McBee and Joseph Jordan for District 2 and incumbent Jason Jacoby and Leslie Schumann in District 6. Three positions are on the ballot in the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital’s board of directors election slated for May 5. Posts open include Precinct 2, currently held by Jeanagayle Behrens; Precinct 4, held by Ila Mitchell; and an at-large seat held by Dr. Richard Lane. Lane has filed for his at-large post, Verona Sephus Garner has signed up for the Precinct 2 position and Raymond Torres has filed for the Precinct 4 position. Early voting begins April 18 and runs through May 1. The election will be held on May 5 at respective voting places throughout the county.
