Brady Relays set Saturday, attracting only five schools

Track meets are on the slate for this weekend at Bulldog Stadium as a junior high meet will take place on Friday and the annual Brady Relays will be featured on Saturday. Coach Jay Jones said the big affair on Saturday will attract only five teams’Ballinger, Coleman, Bangs, Liberty Hill and Brady. In the hey days of the Brady Relays as many schools as 30 would be here for the gala event. “Nowadays, everyone has a track,” Jones said. “Back in the ’50s, Brady had one of the best tracks in the state. We sent out 40 invitations for this meet, and we only got four okays.” He said one factor to Brady not having more than four teams coming is that the Brady track has only six lanes. “Some coaches don’t like that,” he said. The prelude to the Brady Relays will be the Brady Junior High gathering on Friday. It will also have only five teams here. They include Coleman, Llano, Bangs, Comanche and Brady. That meet will get underway at 4 p.m. The high school meet, for boys and girls, varsity and junior varsity, will begin at 9:30 a.m. with field events. All events will be finals, Jones said. The running events will begin about 1 p.m.
