Judging completed, awards to be given for art exhibition

The judging has been completed for the Stars of Texas Third Annual Juried Art Exhibition. The announcement of the winners and presentation of awards will be at a reception scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m at the Brownwood Depot Civic and Cultural Center. Prize monies for this year’s competition are in excess of $3,500. Dorothy Mayes Best of Show – $1,000, Kohler Company Award and Stars of Texas Purchase Award – $750 each, Juror Award – $500, Merit Award – $300 and five Honorable Mention awards – $50 each. Sarah Logan, Curator of the Art Center of Waco, was the judge for this years competition. Ms. Logan commented that “a juror’s task can be made difficult by a scarcity of good entries. In this case the opposite was true. With so many strong entries, it was tough narrowing the work down to my final selections. Unfortunately, it was not necessary to eliminate works, not because they were substandard, but there simply is not enough space to include them all.” There were nearly 200 entries from artists as far as Midland and Temple, as well as from the surrounding communities. The final selection is represented by a variety of mediums which include oils, watercolors, metal works, clay, acrylics and pastels. Ms. Logan further stated, “I have tried to put together a pleasing collection of works which I hope will convey to the viewer the breadth and diversity of talent within the community.” The majority of the artists have made their art available for purchase. The exhibition will be open to the public from Sunday Feb. 11 through Saturday, Feb. 18. Hours will be as follows: Sunday, reception from 1-4 p.m., with awards presentation at 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the artist demonstrations that are scheduled throughout the week.
