Powerlifters compete at Waco meet

The Brady High School powerlifting team traveled to Waco on Saturday and competed in the second annual Waco High Powerlifting Meet. Competing against athletes from Waco, Copperas Cove, Killeen, Corsicana, Belton, Waco Midway, Lago Vista, Taylor, Marble Falls and many others, Brady posted a respectable finish. Abraham Cortez finished in first place in the 132 lb. division. He established a meet record in the squat lift with 380 lbs. and a total lift of 895 lbs. His combined total was 80 lbs. more than his closest competitor. Frank Corder finished fifth out of 20 lifters in the 220 lb. class while Fidel Huerta and Randy Holloway took seventh and ninth place, respectively. Holloway had the fifth best bench press with respect to his body weight of any lifter at the meet. Jeff Bowden competed in the 181 lb. class and placed seventh of 25. Aaron Hays also competed in this class and finished 14th. Chase Pilgrim competed in the 242 lb. class and finished ninth of 20 entrants. “Every member of the team competed well and set their mark in the regional rankings,” said coach Sam Prater. “Each weight class takes the to ten lifters to the regional meet and all seven of these athletes are either in the top 10 or are within close striking distance.”
