As Brady coach Shawn Dalbert promised, his Bulldog basketballers are continuing to improve, and it became evident Dec. 21 when the Dogs fought Abilene Wylie tooth and nail before bowing 68-66 in overtime. The loss gives a 2-10 mark on the season, but Dalbert believes his team is beginning to emerge from that rocky start. “I’m really proud of our young kids. They are right where we want them to be at this stage of the season. And I’m not surprised in how well we played Wylie last week,” he said Wednesday afternoon. Due to the fact that this is his initial season to coach the Brady varsity team, Dalbert has brought the squad along slowly. “We don’t want to peak too soon. Some teams that beat us earlier in the year are starting to slack off. But we expect to be at our apex when District 26-3A competition begins on Jan. 12,” he said. In the game at Abilene against the huge Wylie school that has some 875 students but still plays in Class 3A, the Doggies played right along with them before falling in overtime by two points. “Our only senior, Sean Borchert, was our leading scorer with 28 points. He really lit up the scoreboard. He’s back to his old self now. He took control and was a true inspiration to his team,” Dalbert said. The coach also praised the play of sophomore Hunter Wilkinson (13 points) and freshman Cole Whisen-hunt (12 points). “Sophomore Clifton Tally, who is returning after an ankle sprain, also turned in eight big points, while another sophomore Blake Andrews was a factor under the boards,” he said. Dalbert said he was not surprised at his team’s resurgence. “We are not there yet, but we are seeing where we want to be, and we know where we are going,” he said. “We also realize that our record will be 0-0 when district play commences.” Score by quarters: Brady 9 22 15 15 5’66 Wylie 6 25 16 14 7’68 Brady scorers: Johnny Menefield 4, Cole Whisenhunt 12, Sean Borchert 28, Hunter Wilkinson 13, Clifton Tally 8, Blake Andrews 2.
