‘Three-way’ intersection wreck claims life of Austin woman

A two-car collision at the intersection of U.S. Highways 87 North and 283 North killed the driver of one vehicle and sent the passenger and the driver of the other vehicle to the hospital in critical condition. A 1995 Toyota Camry, driven by JoAnn Scott Bass, 68, of Austin was turning left onto 87 South when it was struck broadside by a 2001 Chevrolet pickup driven by Gilbert Wade Neel, 39, of Monahans. The pickup was traveling north on Hwy. 87 toward San Angelo. Fire and rescue personnel used hydraulic cutting and rescue tools to assist in the extrication of Mrs. Bass. Mrs. Bass’ husband, Thomas Alexander Bass, 72, also of Austin, was transported to the Heart of Texas Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo for treatment of internal injuries. As of Wednesday evening, Mr. Bass was in critical but stable condition. Neel was also airlifted to Shannon to receive treatment of internal injuries.
