Ethel Bernice Adkins, 88, of Georgetown died Monday, Dec. 11 in Temple. Funeral services will be held Friday (today) at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Georgetown with Dr. Tim Bruster officiating. Services are under the direction of Cook-Walden/Davis Funeral Home of Georgetown. She was the daughter of Olga Swenson Carlson and Gustav Carlson, grew up in Taylor and graduated from Taylor High School. She graduated from the University of Texas where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and the Orange Jackets. She married James Newton Adkins on May 27, 1934, in Brady. They lived on their ranch northwest of Georgetown since then. She taught for many years in the Taylor, Georgetown and Leander schools. She was employed at the Williamson County Sun during the 1950s. She was very active in her community and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown where she taught Sunday School for many years. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, James Adkins; three sons and their families, James Newton Adkins, Jr., and wife, Rosemary, of Alexandria, Vir., Brian Howard Adkins and wife, Linda, of Fort Worth, and David Joe Adkins and wife, Frances, of Abilene; a grandson, James Newton Adkins III of Sydney, Australia; four granddaughters, Gretchen Leoni of Alexandria, Vir., Judith Adkins of New Haven, Conn., Kori Chisham of Alexandria, Vir., and Kristen Adkins of Abilene; and two great-granddaughters, Carolyn and Kathleen Adkins of Sydney, Australia. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Carlson.
