Dave Campbell’s 2000 Texas Football magazine is on the newsstands and is packed with information and details about all of the Texas football teams from high schools to colleges. The pre-season picks for District 26-3A are for the Burnet Bulldogs to reign supreme with their large enrollment and the fact that they are returning 11 lettermen and six offensive and four defensive starters from an 11-2, Division I quarterfinalist team. Burnet is followed by the Wimberley Texans, the Llano Yellowjackets, Brady Bulldogs, Ingram Tom Moore Warriors and Liberty Hill Panthers. Did the Brady Bulldogs get a good deal when they were transferred into District 26–3A in the UIL realignment last January’ Well, that really remains to be seen. Being one of the smallest schools in Class 3A in the state, the Doggies will again be facing teams that have huge advantages over them in enrollment. Brady, with 366 enrollees, did get away from one of the largest schools, Abilene Wylie (799), in their previous district (6-3A), but they picked up an old foe, Burnet, which has grown to its present 748 students. The other members of the new league are larger than Brady’s Average Daily Attendance (ADA). Other than Burnet, the district schools are Wimberley 546, Ingram Moore 490, Llano 464 and Liberty Hill 405. District 6-3A is also a strong one as 4A Sweetwater was moved back into 3A this season. Brady and Grape Creek departed and Early joined Clyde, Merkel and Wylie to make that six-team league. The magazine has this to say about coach Jay Jones’ Bulldogs: BRADY BULLDOGS’Coach Jay Jones. 14 lettermen, 6-4 starters, return from 5-6 team, 8 lettermen lost. Players to watch: QB Rhett Behrens (5-10, 180, 4.6) HB Eric Garcia (5-11, 185, 4.6) FB-DL Frank Corder (5-10, 215, 4.7), OL Chase Pilgrim (6-1, 235, 5.2), LB Zane Brandenberger (5-10, 185, 4.8), WR-DB Patrick Ledezma (5-9, 170, 4.7). Other returning starters: TB Johnny Menefield, TE Canuto Ledezma, OL Zach Brown, DL Sam Rocha, K Jody Jones. Top prospect: OL Sammy Hernandez. Notes: Coach Jones expects the Bulldogs to be stronger and faster in his second season. Behrens was the best all-around player in the district in ’99. Corder and Ledezma earned all-district distinction. The Bulldogs have not posted a playoff win in 42 years. A thumbnail sketch of the other teams are: BURNET BULLDOGS’Coach: Edwin Abernathy. 11 lettermen, 6-4 starters, return from 11-2 Division I quarterfinalist. 19 lettermen lost.
