BJH tennis finishes season on high note

The Brady Junior High tennis team ended their season last weekend in San Saba and according to coach Megan Bierschwale, it was a great triumph. “We went from losing all our matches at our first tournament by six, seven and even eight games to winning two third place titles, one consolation championship and losing most of the remaining matches by only a couple of games,” said the coach. The doubles team of Reed Williams and Jonathon Mendez drew a bye in the first round and then handled the Hahne/Wheeler team from Lampasas, 8-3. The third round put them against the Mason Baxter/Beam pair who won the match 8-6. Competing for the third place spot, they beat out another Lampasas team to bring home a top three finish. The eighth grade boys doubles was round robin format and Brandon Linnard and Oscar Villarreal won the consolation championship. Singles competition began Saturday and under windy conditions, Stacy Lohn bested San Saba’s Jamie Jones, 8-3, before beating Kaylee Feighner from Lampasas, 8-1. In the third round however, Brie Lehmberg from Mason outplayed her 8-2. The loss put her in the duel for third and a victory over Jana McLain from Lampasas gave her the third place spot. Other team members who competed in the tournament were Jaime Allen, Anand Patel, Taylor Owens, Jasmine Lafuente, Allison Johnson, Ted Williams, Daniel Solis, Elizabeth Ramirez, Rosa Botello, Rachel Martin, Brooke Ansell, Celina Sanchez and Sandra Ibarra. “The progress and accomplishment of this team was amazing,” said Bierschwale. “They practiced all of the time with great enthusiasm and little complaining. I am proud of what they have accomplished this spring with tennis. I have several players who had never picked up a racket until February when we began practice. At each of the three tournaments, they have played kids who grew up playing tennis and they gave them a run for their money. We had a great end to a terrific season and I am very proud of this year’s team.”
